Sun Rise – Sun Set Excursions – Guided New Mexico Hikes

Sunrise Or Sunset Excursions

Led by Walter W. Nelson, founder of the Abiquiu Workshops. Each excursion takes a select group of photographers, painters, or naturalists to some of the most extraordinary and secret landscapes in the area.

–Tsiping, “Flaking Stone Mountain Pueblo.” High on a remote mesa above Abiquiu, reachable only by a steep, winding trail, lies the remote Tsiping, one of the largest prehistoric ruins in the U.S. Moderate hike.  6hr. minimum

–The White Place. Deep in a canyon beyond the Abiquiu valley lies the White Place. Strange rock formations eroding from pure white sandstone in the shapes of tents, pillars, chimneys, ribs, hobgoblins, and toadstools greet the eye in a surreal landscape. Easy to moderate.  2 hr. minimum

–Pedernal Peak. Climb to the summit of Pedernal Peak, the mountain so beloved of Georgia O’Keeffe. The narrow top, where O’Keeffe’s ashes were scattered, presents one of the most spectacular views in the entire Southwest. A very steep, strenuous climb.  8 hr. minimum

Shrine Valley, Painted Mesa, Womb Canyon. This excursion explores the canyon and mesa country at the base of Pedernal Peak. You will see strange rock formations in brilliant reds and yellows, a gypsum mesa, and a bizarre, bright yellow slot canyon. Easy to moderate.  4 hr. minimum

The Heart of Copper Canyon. Cañon del Cobre, north of Abiquiu, presents a wilderness of arroyos, rock formations, red canyon walls, and other unusual landscape elements. Easy to moderate.  4 hr. minimum
