Overview

This sculpture workshop, led by renowned stone sculptor’s Candyce Garrett and Alexandra Morosco, is designed to help beginning to professional sculptors develop their skills working with Alabaster, Limestone, Marble, and Granite.
Sixteen million years ago the Jemez Mountains began a series of volcanic eruptions. Today, in the Abiquiu area, that range is 11,561 feet high. As one moves through this highly diversified landscape, traveling westward form Abiquiu to the Piedra Lumbre (the Valley of the Shinning Stone) and beyond to Christ In The Desert Monastery, one becomes aware of the massive earth forces that created this environment. From high desert multi-colored landforms bounded by mountains, to deep cut gorges where major rivers and arroyos flow, this is a place where the spirit of the stone can speak to you from within.

The Workshop

With hammer and chisel, grinders and blades, a personal dialogue will develop between the sculptor and the stone. As one enters toward its center, form and shape start to emerge, yielding a personal reflection of ones creative being. With this dialogue between the two, forms of personal creation emerge.

Be prepared for your body and soul to travel to places where the unknown resides, bringing out heart-felt reflections from within. Your guide on this personal journey into stone will be Candyce Garrett.

Candyce Garrett: Artist Statement

As an artist, carving granite and living life are synonymous to me-both are challenging and demanding. These dualities bring forth awareness, touching deeply my emotional, physical and spiritual realms. My objective is to honor the stone by being respectful of the shapes and forms that reside on and within. I always hope the finished sculpture will help people reflect upon their own life by encouraging contemplation. www.candycegarrett.com

Candyce has been carving stone since 1987. Her stone of choice is Granite. Her work is in public and private collections including Santa Fe Farmers Market, City of Dublin, Ohio, San Antonio Spurs, and Boldrick Oil Company, Midland, Texas.

Alexandra Morosco: Artist Statement

Where Purpose and Practice Meet The right tools and how to safely use them are only a splinter of our craft; Alexandra’s instructional style weaves purpose and practice together, assisting participants in finding the best tools and approach for each individual to express their own unique vision in stone. www.moroscofinearts.com

Alexandra has been carving stone since 1991, when she studied Sculpture at California State University, Northridge. She furthered her knowledge of stone and carving over the next ten years while holding a studio at Art City in Ventura, Ca. Attracted to the solace of the Cascadian environment, she relocated in 2003 to the Northwest.  Alexandra works on both large-scale public works, as well as smaller personal pieces, predominantly working with the human figure. Her works are allegorical in nature often using the human figure as a storytelling vessel. She works in both stone and bronze, but is partial to the dynamics of natural stone.

Morosco has a longstanding affiliation with the tool companies Trow and Holden Co.(Barre, VT.) and A Cut Above (Van Nuys, CA.) as a field representative specializing in the needs of stone carvers, and she is looking forward to assisting participants in navigating through the labyrinth of tools. Alexandra will assist as an instructor as well as serve as an adviser on tools and their proper usage. www.trowandholden.comwww.StoneFest.org
