Over View

Walter W. Nelson, director of the Abiquiu Workshops @ Ghost Ranch, has been a working artist 43 years. Beginning with photography in 1967, painting in 1980, and sculpture in 1981, he has expanded his art to incorporate all three disciplines into a single image – while at other times he works in one of his three chosen disciplines.

For the past 30 years, he has concentrated is artistic energies on special unique bodies of work. On completing a series or project, he is always in search of another, in style and execution.

From commercial and fine art photography, he has traveled extensively in Europe, Mexico, Australia, and Northern New Mexico, absorbing the myths and lore of each unique area.  From these travels he returns to the within of self, bringing forth unique bodies of works.

In 1989, Walter and Douglas Preston completed a book project “Cities Of Gold – Retracing Coronado” a 70 day, 1000-mile horseback journey across the Southwest. In 2006, Walter and Douglas Preston executed the book “Ribbons Of Time – Dalquest Desert Research Site” for Midwestern State University, in the Big Bend Area of Texas.

His works are in the collections of many museums as well as private and corporate collections, including the Museum of New Mexico, the Fine Art Museum of Houston, Coca-Cola, Neiman-Marcus, IBM, and many others.
